Information On Getting Away From The Din
Neighbours who are noisy are a colossal pain to many householders and in our booming population the problem is spiralling upwards. With more old buildings being converted into condos, and new properties often suffering from flimsy walling or not very much in the way of walls between homes, it’s incredibly common to hear some noise from next door.
If this is just the occasional ring of a phone or slamming of a door it’s not unbearable and you can count yourself lucky that this is all you have to put up with. Even if you have relatively decent neighbours you could still be subject to their parties, what they’re watching on tv, the sound of their loud, zany guests or a crying baby. All these ordinary sounds can grate if you’re constantly suffering from them. You feel like you’re sharing someone else’s life, or that your own life is being intruded upon. What is more irksome is noise during sleepy time – which can disrupt the waking day and even affect your quality of health.
So let’s assume that your neighbours not actually doing anything untoward what can you do about things? It’s one thing to listen to their irksome brats playing soldiers but all they’re doing is flushing the toilet and keeping you up all night!
Your neighbours may not even be aware of the the effect their habits are having on you. Or they might be offended by your curious quirks! If there’s an easy option to take, for example for them not to wear high heels indoors or to change their damn alarm clock it’s worth knocking on their door and having a chat. Be smiley and make sure they know note their fault. After all, if you listen to them there’s every chance they’re listening to you too. So ask if there’s anything that bugs them to keep your noise down – have you ever had the TV up late at night?
If you live in rented condos, talk to the owner. Ask other residents if they think it’s a problem too – you could get the apartment sound tested to see if is compliant with regulations. Of course, some landlords are less concerned than others. If your landlord has insulated to the legally required levels, the responsibility rests with you and your own feelings about the noise.
Sometimes installing your own sound acoustic installation is the least painful solution. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but you should get an specialist contractor to look at your property in the first instance. An expert will be able to advise you on you the best solution.
